In Japan, when moving house, you will have to spend a lot of money such as "offer money" (called 礼金 reikin [golden ceremony]) and "deposit" (called 敷金 shikikin [golden]).

Before you move out, you must notify your landlord that you will be moving at least 1 month in advance. If you do not notify about moving house in Japan, you will have to pay an extra month's rent even if you do not live.

Handling garbage when moving to another place

If you are leaving a lot of garbage when you move out at once, you should contact your local administrative office to ask for it, but it will cost you money. Large garbage must follow the prescribed procedures and then drop it on the designated date and place. Televisions, air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers, washing machines and computers cannot be thrown away on the day of the large garbage collection, but must be picked up by the dealer, but you must pay for shipping and recycling.

Notify electricity, gas, and water companies about service interruptions

At least 3 days before you move out, please call to let us know that you will be moving with the electricity, gas, and water company (the phone number to contact is listed on the bill). On the day you move, employees of the above companies will come to see the clock to calculate the money.

Electricity, gas, tap water: Tell them your current address, new address, name, phone number, and move-in date. It will be more convenient if you have a voucher (electricity, gas, water) or receipt ready.

Check the house and return the keys when you move out

Do not leave unnecessary items in the room after moving out. After moving all the furniture, ask the landlord to check the damaged areas, if there are no problems, the deposit will be refunded. At that time, do not forget to return the house key to the landlord.

Submit a moving notice after moving

After moving house in Japan, go to the nearest Japanese post office to get a sample of moving notice, fill it in completely and then give it to the post office staff or put it in the mailbox. Within 1 year of filing the notice, parcels sent to your old address will be delivered to your new address.
